Characteristics of Classroom Layout to Promote Positive Management:
- Teacher knows what students will accomplish before arranging seats
- Seats are arranged for appropriate classroom task
- Seats are arranged to minimize behavior problems
- Seating arrangement is conducive to student communication
- Arrange the students so everyone’s eyes are directed at the teacher
Below is a picture of what our ideal classroom layout would be. Desks are arranged so that students would be sitting in groups of 2-4 (depending on class size), and all students would be facing the whiteboard. When all students are facing the front of the room and the teacher’s desk is near the front of the room as well, there will be less time for students to distract each other or have side conversations.
Our seating assignment would be formed by random selection, and would be changed every two weeks to provide students opportunities to work with each of their classmates. The teacher would rearrange the seating assignment as necessary to account for any behavior issues or potential bad relationships between students.
